2 Greek Street, Soho, London W1D 4NB
Type of cuisine: Hungarian
Average price: £35.00 Nearest tube: Tottenham Court Rd
The Gay Hussar has oodles and oodles of character especially compared to the uber hip bars and sterile contemporary dining rooms that share its Soho location. Red velour seating and dark wood furnishings are matched with framed caricatures of politicians and low lighting in this narrow but surprisingly long dining room. The Hungarian cuisine also stays true to traditional. The food is delicious and authentic, rich delights of the kind that suit a lengthy, indulgent meal. Hungarian and Transylvanian food employs a lot of sauces, great vegetables like sauerkraut and beetroot, and delicious, strong meats. Try the Kolozsvari Toltott Kaposzta (told you so) - cabbage stuffed with bacon and sausage - chicken in mild paprika sauce with cucumber salad and noodles, roast duck with red cabbage and Hungarian-style caraway potatoes, and, of course, veal goulash with egg dumplings. Expect gigantic portions. For dessert, go with either the poppy-seed strudel or the walnut pancakes.
