SCOTT'S OF MAYFAIR

20 Mount Street, Mayfair, London W1K 2HE

Type of cuisine: Fish and Seafood

Average price: £50.00     Nearest tube: Bond St

Scott's of Mayfair is a glamorous and dazzling London restaurant established in 1851, that has entertained a host of famous diners including Marilyn Monroe, Winston Churchill, Charlie Chaplin and Marlene Dietrich

Scott's was originally opened as an oyster warehouse in 1851 by the young fishmonger John Scott, and it rapidly evolved into the famous seafood restaurant and oyster bar. The restaurant has been housed on two sites: initially in Haymarket until 1968, when the restaurant relocated to its current site in Mayfair. Established as one of the most fashionable and glamorous eateries in town, the restaurant has welcomed film stars, politicians and writers through the decades. Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond, was often seen at Scott's in the 50s and 60s and it was reportedly here that he discovered the dry martini 'shaken not stirred'. Acquired by Caprice Holdings in 2005, the restaurant has returned to its former glory as a seafood restaurant and oyster bar. The oak-panelled dining room at Scott's of Mayfair is a large, elegant room of rich burgundy-leather banquettes and an original chandelier designed by Patrice Butler. The floor is of oak chevrons with a chartreuse-green marble-mosaic fan motif around the impossibly glamorous bar, which features a green onyx top and a stingray-skin-covered front with a mix of brushed-brass and polished-chrome detailing. The very name Scotts conjures up warm images of traditional cooking using the very best of British ingredients and service, and recently its menu has been carefully augmented to include typical British meat dishes, alongside the fresh seafood, oysters and caviar for which the restaurant will always be known.

We had a wonderful experience at Scott’s last Saturday. The food was excellent and can be reasonably priced if you don’t pick lavishly. Highly recommended.
