From the moment you are ushered through the doors by the top-hat wearing attendant, J Sheekey's restaurant impresses you. Fish is their speciality, but Sheekey's also provide vegetarian and vegan menus as well. In 1896 a seafood market stall-holder, Josef Sheekey, was granted permission from Lord Salisbury to serve fish and seafood in his new building development in St Martin's Court. Upon the condition that he supplied meals to his lordship's private post-theatre dinner parties, J. Sheekey, the restaurant, was born. Originally a small oyster bar, the restaurant grew in size and reputation through the 1950s and 1960s, as it embraced the adjoining properties and attracted the discerning fashionable diners of the day.The restaurant was subsequently owned by the Scott's Group until 1993 when it declined into bankruptcy and disrepair. It was rescued and relaunched by Caprice Holdings in 1998. Today the freshness and availability of all J Sheekey restaurant ingredients mean that they have no restaurant set menu, but the no fuss service, wonderful fresh selection of dishes of the day, and no sittings, make Sheekeys one of London's finest. J Sheekey provides a faultless restaurant dining experience which makes it one of the most popular London restaurants, so booking a table well in advance is always advised.

We dined at the restaurant on Friday as my birthday treat. We turned up without having booked not realising that we were at such a renowned establishment. The receptionist was very welcoming and found us a table. The service was spot on helpful but not obtrusive and the food superb. The skate cheeks, cod with chorizo and the fish curry were wonderful. A slight problem when a glass of wine was knocked over was resoved very professionally by Hamish. A great start to a super evening

As someone who eats out five nights a week, and has been doing so for about twenty years, I have no hesitation in recommending Sheekey's as the top fish restaurant in London. The service is always first rate (without being overstarched), the cooking is consistently excellent and the atmosphere makes one reluctant to leave. When bad Englishmen die they go to heaven when good Englishmen die they must surely go to Sheekey's. But don't wait until then - go today!

Decided to dine at J Sheekey's following a bad meal at Bentley's the night before and still hankering for great sea-food, we were not disappointed. From the minute we arrived we were treated like long lost friends, nice table for 2 and great service. What makes Sheekey's special is the buzz of the place, the great staff and the most fantastic seafood/fish I have had in many a year. Yes, you will pay top dollar but it is worth it and a lot, lot more. We paid more at Bentleys and had a very somber evening which we would never want to repeat. Sheekey's, well need I add that I will return, think this review speaks for itself! Well done to all at Sheekeys.

We took two friends to Sheekeys and had the most wonderful meal. We had their pink champagne, dover sole, the platter - which was to die for. The ambience was just terrific, we were well looked after but not fussed over, the waiting staff were courteous, very knowledgeable about their food and, although our table was needed for a 10:30 booking, we were able to finish our evening in the small bar area with seating and were looked after very well. I would recommend this restaurant to absolutely anyone! It is perfect on every count, whether entertaining or just a romantic dinner for two. Enjoy! Janet

We went to Sheekey's for lunch for my mum's 60th. What a lovely place! The staff were so courteous and not false, and the food was out of this world! i had mussels to start followed by the plaice with new potato mash with rock prawns and chocolate tart to finish for 21.50 it was a steal! Would reccommend to any one with good taste...
