One of the city of London’s culinary stalwarts, Gow’s Restaurant & Oyster Bar has been serving oysters and all manner of vintage fish and seafood since 1884. Based on the corner of Broad Street and Liverpool Street and now owned by the Balls Brother chain, this traditional Edwardian restaurant has been given a revamp, but has lost none of its original charm. Upstairs you’ll find the oyster bar where fresh British oysters are served with a lemon and shallot vinegar alongside quail’s eggs with celery salt, salads and terrines. Watch the world go by from your window and wash all this finery down with one of Gow’s champagne cocktails. Downstairs, the elegant restaurant dishes up a more modern slant on the original menu, with dishes like pan fried skate wing with capers and lemon or poached lobster with white chocolate sauce. Meat eaters are also catered for with choices like Barnsley lamb chop with kidneys and bacon. The wine list includes a good smattering of reds and whites as well as vintage and non vintage champagnes. Gow’s Restaurant & Oyster Bar has been cleverly transformed to compete with modern day dining, but has lost none of its original appeal and history along the way.
