Richard Corrigan's passion for earthy and uncluttered food has won him international acclaim at Soho's Lindsay House and this same emphasis on purity of ingredients and honest presentation has wooed critics and public alike at Bentley's Seafood Restaurant & Grill. Situated in an historic Victorian building on the borders of Soho and Mayfair, Bentley's combines a relaxed oyster bar with a more formal Grill restaurant, plus three private rooms, arranged over three floors. The sensitive restoration of this famous restaurant has retained many original features of the building and the spirit of Bentley's original arts and crafts heritage has been preserved in the carefully thought-out choice of furnishings, fabrics and wallpapers. American oak flooring, light wooden panelling and the reframed old Bentley's fish paintings all add to the relaxed air of calm, understated luxury. Oysters are the house speciality, with much of the menu being traditional looking to enhance the quality of the produce by simple preparation and cooking. The Grill menu firmly focuses on the freshness of Bentley's fish, meat and game and a light hand in the kitchen allows the quality of the ingredients to sing for themselves. Typical dishes might include Wild Sea Bass with soft fennel and herbs, Dover Sole 'Meunière' and steamed Elwy Valley Lamb pudding. On the ground floor, with a choice of sitting either at the marble topped bar or in red leather banquettes at marble tables, Bentley's Oyster Bar has a casual air perfect for either grazing, dropping in before or after a show or eating a full blown meal. Dishes including Smoked Salmon and blinis, Clam Chowder, Whole Crab mayonnaise and Bentley's Fish Pie are on the menu, along with Irish Stout, beers, plus a well-chosen selection of wines and Champagne. Visited 23/8/09.. Superb dover sole and smoked salmon.What a shame that they detach oysters from main shell.This practice is totally wrong and never have I had it done in 43 years of consuming these in France and Belgium. It is totally out of order and to suggest it is carried out according to Mr Corrigan's orders is even more ridiculous. I would love to have his comments on this. It was enough to ensure I don't go back despite the other good points.
